Jittu planned to deliver her baby at home. Without a midwife by her side, she suffered an obstructed labour for two excruciating days. When she was unable to go on, her family took her to the closest hospital for help.
Tragically, Jittu’s baby was delivered stillborn.
After her agonising ordeal and grieving the loss of her baby, Jittu woke up to find herself lying on a urine-soaked bedsheet. “I would pee everywhere, whether sitting, eating, walking, or sleeping.” Jittu recalls.
Sadly, Jittu was only one of an estimated 22,000 Ethiopian women living with an untreated fistula injury. Many of these women are physically and socially isolated, left to suffer hidden and alone.

For every $1 donated, 70 cents goes directly towards Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia’s programs for the treatment and prevention of obstetric fistula, 13 cents is necessary for accountability and administration and 17 cents is invested in fundraising efforts which allows us to help even more women in future years.
