Hamlin Impact Report: January- March 2023

Surgeons at work

January- March 2023

We’re delighted to share news about Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia’s Treatment program and the strong start to 2023 made by our patient identification officers and surgeons.

From January to March 2023, a total of 1,031 life-changing surgeries were performed and 1,804 women attended outpatient appointments at Hamlin’s Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital and our regional fistula hospitals in Yirgalem, Metu, Harar and Bahir Dar.

Project Zero, Hamlin’s ambitious new program to accelerate the eradication of obstetric fistula in Ethiopia, launched in February in Ale Woreda near our Metu hospital. So far, six women, isolated and living alone with fistula injuries for years, have been found and transferred to Hamlin hospitals in Metu and Addis Ababa for surgery.

As you know, prevention is key to eradicating fistula. I’m pleased to report that 10,405 women attended their first antenatal care appointment with a Hamlin midwife between January and March.

We’re proud to advise that 496 women completed their numeracy and literacy training at Hamlin hospitals. 98 women completed vocational training at  Desta Mender, Hamlin’s rehabilitation centre, and returned to their communities restored, recovered and with hope for their future.

Thanks to your generosity,  the future looks bright for Ethiopian women.

The Treatment Dashboard is used to record patient admission rates, the number and type of surgical procedures undertaken, the fistula closure rate, the incontinence cure rate, and the number of patients and outpatients discharged at each of Hamlin’s fistula hospitals.
