Women supporting women!
Thank you to everyone who joined us for International Women’s Day this year. We celebrated the women of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia, through the paintings and drawings of renowned Australian artist Wendy Sharpe.
The Hamlin Art Exhibition by Wendy Sharpe exhibition featured over 30 works from Wendy’s recent trip to Ethiopia, where she witnessed firsthand the life-changing work of Dr Catherine Hamlin and her team to restore the health and dignity of fistula sufferers.
“It is hard to think of a more worthy cause.” – Wendy Sharpe
Wendy recently met co-founder of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia, legendary Australian surgeon and inspirational woman, Dr Catherine Hamlin. Catherine has spent 61 of her 96 years tirelessly dedicated to helping women with fistula. To date, Catherine and her team have healed over 60,000 Ethiopian women.
Over many days, Wendy connected with recovering fistula patients at Hamlin’s Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital. Her artworks beautifully portray the beginning of their healing process – capturing moments of joy and hope. For the first time, these women realised they are not alone. That they can be cured.
Wendy Sharpe and Hamlin
Wendy Sharpe is one of Australia’s most awarded artists. Wendy first became involved with the Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation in late 2018, where she was part of our inaugural Art for Hamlin Exhibition in Sydney. Her passion for the charity was ignited and Wendy was moved to support the charity in any way she could.
One year later, in November 2019, Wendy adventured to Ethiopia with Team Hamlin. Over three and a half weeks, she explored Ethiopia and visited Hamlin project sites – spending time with recovering fistula patients.
All artworks in our Hamlin Art Exhibition by Wendy Sharpe were produced in Ethiopia. Watch a behind the scenes video with Wendy below!
