Kimberly’s High Tea for Hamlin

Why host a High Tea for Hamlin?

By hosting a High Tea for Hamlin you’re helping Dr Catherine Hamlin get even closer to her dream of eradicating obstetric fistula in Ethiopia.

With events all over Australia, the story of fistula sufferers is spread far and wide and the impact is great. It is amazing to see the strong community of Australian supporters come together to help end a preventable childbirth injury and restore women’s lives.

Meet Kimberly

Kimberly was one of our 2016 High Tea for Hamlin hosts. She held an event at her church and it was a booming success. Kimberly explains why the work of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia is so important to her…

“I’m a Hamlin supporter because this wonderful organisation is making such a positive difference in the lives of women across the world. I can’t even begin to imagine the depth of pain that a fistula sufferer must endure, so it is fantastic to see that Hamlin provides such loving, holistic care to their patients and really gives them a chance to lead a life they would be proud of. Receiving updates from Ethiopia about the incredible progress that is being made is just so uplifting.”

On the day…

Kimberly enlisted help from her friends in the lead up to her event and on the day. As they say, many hands make light work.

“I hosted a high tea for Hamlin last September at my church, and I’m so glad I did. I had 50 women attend, and while a big group can be daunting I was amazed at how many people offered to help. All the food was homemade and donated, and we set up a gorgeous buffet table complete with tiered plates that I borrowed from friends. One of the highlights for me was decorating the tables with my own special touches, including a tea menu and fresh flowers. I wanted to really show my guests how thankful I was for their donations.”

“As guests arrived we served Ethiopian iced coffee and during the event I showed the ‘Walk to Beautiful’ trailer. I was blown away by the eagerness of my guests to do whatever they could to help these women in Ethiopia. Their generosity really hit me! All up we raised $2000. When you get a group together for such a vital cause, the energy in the room is just phenomenal!”

Kimberly’s top 3 tips

Here are some of Kimberly’s tips to make any event a success.

ONE

Firstly, realise you can’t do it alone! If you are willing to ask, you’ll find that people will be generous not only with their money but also their time, to help in any way they can from baking to washing up. It’s also so much more fun to share the experience with others.

TWO

You’ll always have left over food, so it’s a good idea to have a big stack of takeaway containers for the end of the event. Sell them for $5 – $10 and let guests take home their favourite treats for later. Less waste, more donations. Win-win!

THREE

If you’re considering hosting a high tea this year, be encouraged that no event is too small. If you’re looking to do a bigger event, start promoting it early, get some friends on board and it will probably be the highlight of your year!

Kimberly and fellow 2016 High Tea for Hamlin hosts raised over $200,000 combined. This is enough to fund 350 life-changing fistula operations. A remarkable result.

This year we’re aiming even higher and we’d love YOU to join us

With High Tea season approaching in September, there’s no better time to think about getting involved.
