Your impact: Kokebe’s Story

Kokebe lives in Chillako, a village in the Oromiya region of Ethiopia. When it was time for her to give birth she laboured for three days at home, before her husband and father took her to the nearest hospital.

But it was too late. Kokebe’s baby was stillborn and she had sustained a terrible obstetric fistula injury, leaving her incontinent.

Kokebe returned home and hid away in grief and shame for 10 long years.

“I didn’t get any help for the fistula. My neighbours abandoned me. I hide myself at home for ten years. I suffered a lot and stayed long in agony.” – Kokebe

Kokebe’s road to recovery

Eventually, Kokebe was told about Hamlin’s Yirgalem Fistula Hospital. She made her way there but, due to the severity of her injuries, she was transported to Hamlin’s Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital for treatment and loving care.

When she saw the other patients being treated for their injuries, Kokebe became hopeful that she too might be cured.

“They [the staff] treated us nicely. They gave us soap, pyjamas and blankets and served with nice foods. Everything is so lovable here.

Now I am cured and about to go home happily and excited. We tell the good news to everyone in need…that there are doctors in Addis that bring happiness to our life. Thank you.” – Kokebe

It’s a special contribution to ensure future generations of Ethiopian women like Kokebe won’t suffer the devastating effects of this horrific injury.
