Naniye’s story

5 years after fistula, Naniye is back to give birth, safely

Naniye was left with an obstetric fistula after her labour was obstructed for three days. When her family were finally able to get her medical assistance, the doctors told Naniye she was lucky to be alive. Sadly her baby was stillborn and she was left permanently incontinent of urine.

Returning to her village, Naniye was so ashamed of her condition that she asked her husband to divorce her. He refused but Naniye left the village and tried to live with her condition alone.

A health professional working in the region found Naniye three months later and arranged for her to be treated at Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia’s Bahir Dar Fistula Hospital. With one single surgery, she was completely cured and dry.

Naniye returned to her village and husband. Now, five years on from surgery, she is back at Bahir Dar, pregnant and preparing for a safe caesarean birth – funded by our generous donors.

“I am here again for safe delivery in your hands… thank you for all you have done to make me a woman again.” – Naniye
