National Nutrition Week

Inspiring Connection and Nourishment

National Nutrition Week is an annual awareness campaign by Nutrition Australia that celebrates the central role of food in connecting and nourishing people and communities.

The focus of the 2024 campaign, running from 14-20 October, is ‘inspiring a connected and nourished Australia’.

Nutrition is key to recovery

Did you know that nutrition plays an important role in our patients’ recovery from obstetric fistula?

Women with this horrific birth injury often arrive at one of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia’s six hospitals severely malnourished after years of hiding away in shame and pain. Surviving on what little they have, many are too weak for the surgery needed to restore their health, dignity and independence.

Food is not only an integral part of a woman’s holistic healing journey after the trauma of obstetric fistula at Hamlin. For our patients, it’s about feeling part of a nurtured – and nourished – community.

During their hospital stay, Hamlin patients enjoy freshly cooked, delicious and highly nutritious local meals to strengthen their bodies and minds.

For a woman who has lived in social isolation, often for many years, enjoying a nourishing meal with other women at a Hamlin fistula hospital is a simple yet incredibly powerful way to heal through connection and hope.

Add an Ethiopian touch to your meals

When you’re doing your healthy meal planning for National Nutrition Week (14-20 October 2024), why not try cooking a nutritious Ethiopian meal using some delicious Hamlin Spice? While you’re enjoying the fruits of your labour, you’ll be supporting women with childbirth injuries on the other side of the world.

Now that’s a true global community!
