United Nations Association of Australia Award for Dr Catherine Hamlin

Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia is incredibly proud to announce that the United Nations Association of Australia is awarding Dr Catherine Hamlin with the UNAA Lifework Award 2017.

History of the UNAA

Established in 1946, the UNAA “endeavours to inform, inspire and engage all Australians regarding the work, goals, and values of the United Nations to create a safer, fairer and more sustainable world.” (https://www.unaa.org.au/)

Peace Program

The UNAA Peace Program aims to unite Australians “as members of the global community…in a concerted effort towards building peace initiatives and work together to achieve peace.” 

To mark World Humanitarian Day on August 19^th 2017, the UNAA Peace Program is honouring exemplary Australians who have devoted their life’s work to humanitarian causes.

Lifework Awards

The purpose of the UNAA Lifework Awards is to recognise ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

It is “a tangible acknowledgement of the long history of dedication men and women have demonstrated in working in positive ways for peace, justice, harmony and community spirit at grassroots level, and in contributing towards the betterment of mankind through industry, enterprise and community service” 

Dr Catherine Hamlin – ‘Individual Award’ recipient 2017

Catherine is to receive a Lifework Award in the ‘Individual’ category, along with Mrs Gabi Hollows, Founding Director of The Fred Hollows Foundation. The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia is to receive the award in the ‘Community’ category.

Catherine is being recognised for “dedicating her life and work to restoring the health and dignity of more than 50,000 Ethiopian women who have survived a horrendous and preventable childbirth injury – obstetric fistula. Together, with her husband, Reg, Dr Hamlin has dramatically transformed the maternal healthcare landscape for the women of Ethiopia.” 

The UNAA Peace Program ‘Lifework Award’ is a great honour, formally recognising Catherine’s nearly 60 years of dedicated work.

Award presentation evening

In order to present the award, the UNAA Peace Program will be holding a Gala Dinner and Awards presentation evening. A Hamlin representative will be attending the presentation to accept the award on Catherine’s behalf, as she lives in Ethiopia.
